(USN, Ret.) MCPO Aughtery E. Means, Sr., 81, of North Kingstown, passed away on December 12, 2018. He was the husband of Phyllis (Cole) for fifty-nine years.
Born in Whitmire, SC, Aughtery was the son of the late Shealey Means and Eliza Jane (Aughtry).
A thirty-three-year United State Navy Veteran, Master Chief Means received many service commendations for his time in Vietnam, Korea, Persian Gulf, Lebanon, and Kuwait, to name only a few. After retiring from the Navy, he spent the next decade in management at the Hoescht Celanese Coventry location.
He was a member of the Stone Mill Masonic Lodge #3, the FRA Branch 42, and the VFW Memorial Post 152. He enjoyed fishing, auto mechanics, car collecting and was definitely a friend to the community.
In addition to his wife, left to cherish his memory are his children, Tammy Franklin of North Kingstown, Jeffrey Means of Stuart, FL, Derrick Means of Channel Island, CA, Pamela Barboza of East Providence, Shonda Smith of Round Rock, TX and Lanada Means of Hollywood, FL; brother Frizell Means of SC; sisters, Claudia Edwards of CT, Katerina Gray of VA and Regina Mosely of CT; eighteen grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Aughtery E. Means, II formerly of Bangor, ME; sister Paralee Shearod; brothers Quemby Means, and Sylvester Means.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 9am in the FAGAN-QUINN Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown. A burial with Military Honors will follow in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
