Phyllis L. Sasso, 95, of Smithfield, died Monday, October 7, at North Bay Manor. She was the widow of Laurence J. Sasso, Sr.
A graduate of Rhode Island College of Education (now RIC), she was a teacher in the Smithfield Schools for 35 years. Following retirement she was elected to the Smithfield School Committee for four terms, serving 16 years.
Mrs. Sasso was a past president, secretary, and treasurer of the Smithfield NEARI. She was a member of the Blackstone Valley Retired Teachers Assoc., National Retired Teachers and had been a member of Irving S. Cook and William Winsor School PTAs; also Greenville Grange, Pomona Grange, and she was a 7th degree member of the National Grange. She was a member of Greenville Baptist Church and the Smithfield Historical Society. In 1997 she was inducted into the Smithfield Heritage Hall of Fame. She later served on the Hall of Fame committee until her health began to fail in 2011.
Mrs. Sasso, whose husband was a well-known orchardist, was noted for her recipes for apple squares, apple pie, apple slump and other apple desserts. She and her sisters were among the originators of the Greenville Grange's May Breakfast, which was widely acclaimed for many years.
The daughter of the late Frederick E. and Annie A. (Quilty) Parker, she was sister to the late Frederick E. Parker, Jr., Eunice Robinson, Arnold H. Parker, Ella Cook, and Lydia Steere.
She is survived by her son Laurence J. Sasso, Jr. of Smithfield, his companion Cynthia A. Cambio, a granddaughter, Lauryn E. Sasso of Sarasota, FL. and former daughter-in-law Kathryn M. Sasso of Smithfield, as well as many nephews and nieces, grand-nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces.
Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 12 at the Tucker-Quinn Funeral
Home, 643 Putnam Pike,(Rt.44) Greenville. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, Johnston.
